The town of Paphos, in the Southwest of Cyprus is a coastal city, and the capital of Paphos District. The town’s rich history and beautiful ruins coupled with the area’s Mediterranean climate and clear seas means that Paphos is a delightful choice to buy property for your second home, retirement, or even as an investment.
According to legend, Paphos is the birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, known to the Romans as Venus, the goddess of love. Even the very name Paphos is related to the Aphrodite story. Paphos was the son of Pygmalion, the Grecian whose statue of the beautiful Galatea was brought to life by the goddess.
This rich history is reflected in the areas architecture. Aphrodite’s temple was built here by the Myceneans in the twelfth century BC, and the remains of many buildings – palaces, fortresses, and tombs, among other things - of the Roman, Hellenistic and Classical periods litter the area. The Nea Paphos mosaics are amongst the most beautiful in the world, and are a must-see for any visitor to Paphos.
The climate of Paphos is typically Mediterranean, with very little rain. Humidity levels can increase drastically in July and August, meaning that many people spend more time indoors, in well air conditioned buildings during those months. Snow falls approximately once every ten years, and in spite of how uncommon it is, it causes no problems.
Paphos International Airport serves the area, with approximately half a million people passing through it each year. It is located ten kilometres southeast of the city, near Timi, making it very convenient for those flying in to view property or even to move in to their new homes.
Property in East Paphos is normally priced around the mid range, with two bedroom homes available for £72,680 to £87,630. Prices vary depending on the exact location – a one bedroom home near Anarita might cost around £75,000. Apartments in Paphos itself are fairly expensive, at around £60,000 for a one bedroom apartment, or around £105,000 for an apartment with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Inland Phaphos is also fairly expensive – a two bedroom home with two bathrooms might cost as much as £133,000.
