Located on the North-West coast of Cyprus, the villages of Polis and Latchi are becoming more and more popular with British expatriates wishing to buy property in Cyprus.
Also known as Latsi, the picturesque fishing village of Latchi makes its living by fishing and exporting sea sponges, with a small sideline in tourism. Many of the stone built tavernas near the coastline offer fresh fish, which is something of a delicacy in the area and very popular with locals and visitors alike. The cool waters and gentle summer breezes of the sandy, pebbly beaches near Akamas national park are a favourite with beach goers, and at night Latchi comes alive with discos, night cruises, and a selection of bars and restaurants.
The name of the quiet village of Polis comes from the Greek word for city, and its full name, Polis Chrysochou, translates to “City of the Golden Land”, and is so named for the lush land surrounding the Chrysochou River. Polis has no large hotels, so the town isn’t overrun with tourists. Instead, it’s a peaceful and secluded retreat from the more active areas of Cyprus, making it a wonderful choice to buy property for a second or retirement home. The town square of Polis, with its wonderful cobbled streets is also an active market place, with traditional stalls selling all many of souvenirs and useful items. Tavernas are scattered throughout, offering locally made wines, including Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine said to be favoured by Richard the Lionheart. Polis is further inland than Latchi, but still offers marvellous views of the coast.
Like all of Cyprus, Polis and Latchi have a warm, dry Mediterranean climate, with a large number of sunny days each year. Spending time on the beautiful coasts nearby is an excellent way to spend a summer day, and is always an option, even in the depths of winter.
Buyers may find real estate in Polis and Latchi a little more expensive than in some other parts of Cyprus, with a one bedroom apartment near Polis or Latchi costing around £60,000. However, property prices are still lower than in many of the more visited areas, such as Coral Bay and Paphos.
Residential developments and off-plan properties are a very popular and growing market in Cyprus, particularly in the Polis and Latchi area, and this may be an option to look into for those who wish to buy property in the Polis and Latchi area.
